You can use the lower-priced LM34DZ (I don't think you need to go down to -50°F). These are interesting; never saw them before.

A little late on this but....

I use a 1-wire system connected to HomeSeer. On the 1-wire I put DS18S20 temperature sensors. I read a post once were someone used that flat speaker wire to run the wires into the freezer and then put the sensor inside the freezer. I've been wanting to get to this but there have been other items to get done. Now that it is too hot to go into the attic its time to look at doing this.
