Surface Contact Selection

Has anyone used these surface mount contacts from Tane Alarm?

Tane Alarm Micro Surface Mount Contact

I need very small contacts, since I cannot drill my vinyl windows (voids the warranty). I was originally looking are the GRI minis, but these are a lot smaller than those.

Any experience with them? Would you use them again? Any disadvantage using them vs. the GRI minis?

I use them and never had a problem. Some are in for about 3 years now. I have not used the GRI's.

There is a guy on eBay with them for about $2.00 a piece in batches of 10.

Nope, I use the GRI 110-T. One possible advantage of the GRI is you can get them without pigtails (with screw contacts). Here is a pic of one mounted.

Thanks for the pic Steve. I like the GRIs, but may give the Tanes a try, since they are about 1/2 the size. Digger, any way you could post a pic of yours installed...maybe a view of the whole window, just to get an idea of how much you see them?

FYI, tselectronic.com sells the Tane Micros for $1.63 each if you buy 10+.

I dont pay for mine. A former coworker/friend of mine works for Tane and I am local to them. The company I work for now also buys tons of stuff from Tane so I get "samples" when needed.

I will see about a pic. They are SMALL so it may be hard to see.

They may be 'shorter' than the GRI, but width about same considering the flat part on the side of the Tane. The GRI is still a cleaner look imho.

Yep. I think you are right. The Tanes are nice and small, but the GRIs might provide an easier way to get a clean installation.

I don't think the size will matter all that much between them, just as long as their color is the same as the window's.

Hehe...Digger, that's a terrible pic! You're zoomed in on them, so they look monstrous! ;) You should take a whole-window pic and dare us to find them, then I'd be impressed with how small they are. ;)

These tiny contacts are intriguing, and I may yet have to resort to them. I've triple checked that me drilling into the sash won't void the warranty and so far they still say it won't (though if something goes wrong with the window later and they can point to my drilling job, then I'm outta luck of coure). So I'll be trying the hidden kind.

I should have taped a dime to the window frame.............

Ya know, maybe they should compare it to a debit card instead...I can't remember the last time I had change in my pocket, or cash even. The dime is the copper one, right? ;)

If you have access to the GRI's, why don't you compare it to that - a side by side ;). But I have to agree with BSR in that at that size, I don't think people will see much diff between them anyway at normal viewing distances.
