Using 2-way listen-in as front door intercom?

I bought all the stuff to do this, but I hooked it all up yet. Here's what I want to happen:

- Visitor rings door bell
- ELK dials a phone number and patches it through to the front speaker/mic
- I talk with magazine salesman and tell him to go away

But, I need to make sure that it's not playing system audio alerts on the front speaker. The only thing that this should be used for is intercom. Also, from the docs, it looks like the intercom->phone conversation will be played on all speakers in the house, I don't want that.

Any suggestions before I start working on this?

You can add a relay to the front door speaker to turn it on only when the listen-in feature is active. You can monitor the outputs 7-9 to see when the microphone is active and use some creative logic to guess when the listen-in session is done.

Usually when the ELK calls you will need to press a few keys to enable listen-in, and more keys to switch between mic and speaker. This can take a few seconds at least. And suppressing the internal speakers is doable, but more relays, more logic. I'm not sure this is the best use of the ELK, but am curious if you get it to work. There are some relatively cheap systems that can do this for you.

This is what I really wanted to do:

But it's $400. I have a spare Polycom IP320, and was thinking about rigging the speakerphone button to an output on the ELK and then wiring the speakphone wires to a box at the front door. Then when someone rings the doorbell, the ELK will take the Polycom offhook and it will autodial through my phone switch. Then I'd have native SIP right to the front door rather than using a crappy ATA converter hooked into the ELK.

I have been looking for something like this -- i do not have an ELK, i have Homeseer, but I assume I could try the same thing. I have a panasonic door speakerphone. I want to be able to talk to the front door speaker when I am not home. So i create an "away" event that somehow dials my cellphone when the front door rings. How do I do that?

If you have an actual phone out there, I would put a small sign on it that says to pick up the phone to ring the bell. You can then do an off-hook autodial either within the phone if it supports it, a SIP ATA device like a Sipura, or Asterisk/Freeswitch.

mobotix has a SIP client built into some of their cameras. you could take a look at it and see what may be compatible on the client side.
