Water Meter 3/4" on 1" pipe?

My water comes in at 1" and is actually reduced at the water utilities meter to 3/4". From here it goes back to 1" then to my supplimental pump (1") reduced back down to 3/4" at the purchased water meter; then back up to 1" (all copper). I don't really notice the bottle necks. I have a water pressure meter which typically always shows around 35-40. All of supply is copper. I am not a plumber; but would have to assume that this methodology is kind of kludgy.

Pete,

That's crazy!

Sounds like the plumber was running out of parts and had to finish it "under-the-gun".

Just surprises me, sounds like something you would have said something about (I know I would have...had I noticed it).

Actually that is not crazy and was likely done on purpose. I know it seems crazy at first glance, but as mentioned by another post, the water companies usually charge a lot more for the bigger meters and tack on additional monthly fees. And since the smaller diamter for such a short distance doesn't have that much affect on flow, people go for it.

The guy who was complaining about $40 bucks a year extra for 1" over ?3/4" should be saying "hey man, I have this awesome deal where for $40 bucks extra I get a 1" valve." Where I live, it would be about $400 more for a bigger valve! My minimum billed usage is 5000 gallons a month with 5/8. I thinkg that jumps to 10,000 gallons minimum billed for 3/4, even if you use zero. My actual usage is about 3800. I get so ticked off about the minimum usage that sometimes I just want to go out and spray water on the street to get up to 5000 gallons. Fortunately I am not that spiteful and would prefer to preserve our aquifers.
