Whole House Audio

Hey All,

Do you typically use a receiver with a whole house system, other than the distributing unit?

I am planning on installing a whole house audio system someday. What I have so far is in wall/ceiling speakers in 4 rooms and an old panasonic receiver. I just put in a 6 speaker selector just to have some sound distributed to the rooms. I am thinking eventually I will go with a Russound or something similiar.

Thanks

no need for a receiver with a russound/nuvo type setup, unless you need to to DD/DTS/PL2 decoding in a home theater type setup.

In my case, I have a Denon 3805 in the H/T, which has a s/pdif input from the HTPC (for movies) to the VDP input, & Sony777 to the DVD input which are my digital sources.
I also have the unpowered NuVo Zone8 output going to the CD input of the Denon 3805. The NuVo routes my analog CD & XM sources to the H/T room.

If I didn't have a H/T room with the DD/DTS/PL2 movies as part of the setup, i wouldn't have needed the 3805 at all, and could have gone direct to the speakers from a powered zone on the NuVo.

Yes, you could use a receiver as a source.
Depending on what system you go with, you will probably have 4 - 6 source inputs. One could be your receiver (or just a tuner if you have a separate one), and whatever else you would like to listen to, ie ipod, satellite etc.

Well I have a 5 zone whole house audio system that I did very inexpensive using separate receivers. I control it using a Netremote skin I designed and using Girder 5 for the IR control. It is a true multizone system as I can play a separate track in each zone or sync the zones if I desire. Its a great setup with a high WAF.

My showcase needs updating some but its pretty close to what I run now. It might give you some ideas as it has many others.

Thanks, your feedback is greatly appreciated. I am still determining my home theatre needs which would clearly impact wether or not I need a new receiver and if so the type of receiver.

Thanks,
Mike
