Ok, as the topic says, I was looking at these both (yes i know they are both x10 :-). But the question is what is the different except one is the "pro" model. Is one a second run, and the other isnt etc. Thanks for your help towards my ignorance.

SPDI3? Maybe a XPDI3.
The WS12A is a three wire [third wire is for companion switch to trigger it] dimmer and steals power through the load. Should only be used with Incandescent type loads.
XPDI3 is a four wire dimmer that uses a Neutral wire besides the line; load and companion trigger. It can also be used for Inductive loads like a fan or low voltage lighting with a transformer.
I believe the closer to WS12A X10Pro model is the XPD3
Both the newer WS12A and XPD3 modules are now soft start so they ramp on and off. Ramp rate is not adjustable.
X10 and X10Pro models are most times equivalent. I believe the X10Pro units have a longer standard warranty.
You can find the X10Pro information and manuals here. http://www.x10pro.com/

I did not know this. I use these switches a lot (WS12a) here at the house. Question though, how do you know you are getting the 'newer' model of switch when you order? ;)

As far as I know. You would not know. The model number was never changed and only X10 knows the exact date code when they changed.
It was a time back. So if you are getting fresh stock. It most likely is soft start.
The newer LM456 Lamp Modules also are soft start and the newer three pin [no confirmation the two pin is also] Appliance modules where redesigned to be more CFL friendly. Part of a redesign due to the older parts being obsolete. New ones have things like surface mounted parts.

One of the wiki entries seems to indicate late 2007.

Ok, thanks so much for those answers. I may have quoted the wrong pro model (my bad, havnt looked at it to verify), but irregardles, is the dimming at the switch pretty easy and painless. The WAF went down when I put in the regular push button dimmers that didnt dim at the switch (w/o the hack that i didnt want to mess with).

On a side note, I have the x10 std 3 way push button switch, thats what I'm replacing since a power hit made the switch stay on ALL the time, even after a real breaker switch tripp (not just the breaker at the switch). It wont respond to x10 or the push button, just stays on.... Any ideas...... Thats why I want to replace it.

Thanks again,
Dan
