OPII communications has worked for years via the RS232 port.  Suddenly it stop.  Using WIN7 with USB to RS232 adapter but now get Unexpected communications error 53.  Used different computer running XP with motherboard RS232 port but same problem.

Thoughts?  Return for repair?  Do ultimate reset?

Thanks

You could also use the ethernet port on the computer and panel with a crossover cable. Just set your computer to use an IP address one away from the address used by the panel. No network is needed, just a crossover able.

How would this be used to diagnose a serial port issue?

The problem was he can't connect to the panel. How do you know there is a bad serial port?  This is the alternative to the OP sending back the board to Leviton with lots of money.

Time is money. Right Del?

If you want to fix the serial port, I'd check that the USB to RS232 adapter. Windows has a way of changing the serial port number for no reason and then PC Access can't connect. If you haven't already, remove the USB connector and reconnect it.

I was reading that the serial port issue was related to the OPII and not the PC. I haven't seen an OPII with a USB port on it, so is that something really new with the panel?

I read the OP's statement as he has a USB to 232 dongle on a machine, connected to a serial port on the OPII. No way to troubleshoot USB-232 dongle using a crossover cable and TCP that I know of. Different protocols and communications methods.

I went with the assumption that the OP also would've gone through and tested the USB-232 adapter with another PC using hyperterminal or Putty, or at least, tried another known good functional USB-232 adapter. Basic troubleshooting before sending off a panel as a RMA with cash anyways.
