HAI UPB PIM problem

I am new to UPB so please bear with me....

I just got a HAI UPB PIM and a HAI 600w non-dimming UPB switch and trying to get it setup.

I got it all setup on my Omni IIe and when trying to configure the switch, it keeps saying no module found. I can hear both the PIM and the switch making buzzing noises when in setup mode and trying to configure it. I tried configuring the Omni IIe in both UPB and HLC modes and neither worked. I also tried factory resetting to defaults.

I also bought a serial connector to connect the PIM to my computer to test it out. When I plug it in and use UPStart to try to connect to the PIM, it can't find it.

Is there any other ways to test to see if the PIM may be bad or if I just have things setup wrong?

I also have a whole house surge protector installed in the circuit panel. Would that affect UPB?

Thanks!

It sounds like a setup issue with the PIM and the computer. Maybe try a different COM port

I've tried with the built in COM port and with an add in serial card. I verified that the COM port works with other devices also.

Have you tried resetting it to message mode with a 10 press of the button then a 5 press and finally a 2 press?

Yes I have tried resetting it.

Also, I now know why i can't connect to the PIM from my PC, I was apparently sent the wrong model serial connector. I didn't even think to double check. I am in the process of getting it exchanged.

I have also found a couple of threads where some people mention that UPB doesn't play well with UPS's?? I have 3 UPS's currently in my house. Would that affect the discovery of the switch?

I assume the switch is able to communicate with the PIM though since I can hear it start buzzing right after I start trying to configure it. And then it stops buzzing after it says no module found.

Thanks

I have 4 or 5 UPS devices and about 40 UPB devices with excellent signal strength and no noise indicated in UpStart.

I've had issues with UPSs attenuating UPB signals when located near the PIM on the same circuit. In your case, I'd get the PIM working on your PC first (UPStart sees it), then try to set up the switch with UPStart. You can see signal strength both on sent as well as received signals and use that to troubleshoot.

You said you bought a serial connection for the PIM to connect to the computer but do you mean you have a different cable than the one you use to connect the Omni to the PIM correct? The cables are different (but look the same) for using a PC vs. the Omni. Perhaps they are backwards?

Just a thought...

I did have the PIM plugged in next to a UPS on the same outlet. I'll wait til i get the replacement serial connector and try it out.

Thanks!!

It was the serial connector that was different. There was a stick on it with the model number and it was different than the one I ordered for the PIM to PC connection. Hopefully, i'll get the right one this time :)

Yep... exactly the scenario I had: PIM and UPS shared the same outlet. I ended up putting an outlet in my office on a different circuit then plugging my UPS into that to solve it.

I have my PIM plugged into an outlet that is plugged into a UPS... no issues :)

The only time I've had UPB issues with UPS's is when the power is out and I need to turn off a device plugged into a UPS.

Interesting. My PIM wasn't plugged into the UPS, it was plugged into the same outlet that the UPS was (unprotected side). I encountered the problem with an APC SmartUPS 1400 and a PCS USB PIM.

So I finally got the serial connector for the PIM and hooked it up and tried to use UPStart. It found my PIM and when I tried to use it to find my HAI non-dimming switch, it still can't find it. And yes, I did put the switch into setup mode.

These are the details from UPStart when trying to find the switch. Anyone knows what this means?

Thanks!
