M1g Serial port

Hi, I am still very new to elk products. I am just setting up my first system. The question I have is, I have an M1xep connected to my serial port and wil probably be using Insteon or Zwave. Don't i need to connect the converter for these to the serial port also? May sound like a stupid question, But I am trying to look ahead.
Any input would be great.

No. The M1XSP's attach to the RS485 bus, like the keypads, input/output expanders, etc.
