New Brultech Energy Monitoring Model (ECM-1240) due in 2009

Pretty slick, yet simple, interface.

Not too fond of the idea of monthly monitoring fees, to provide me with data I've collected.

Neurorad,

Just a reminder that there is no actual data collected on the site with the new ECM-1240 installed with the gateway. All data is sent to our hosting centre and there is no dedicated PC required at the install location. Our monitoring fee is very reasonable considering reports are available at anytime and historical data is stored.

I can see the monitoring service being helpful for those people that don't leave a computer running 24/7. Afterall, the idea is to try and conserve energy, so running a computer all the time just to record the information is counter productive.

Of course it all depends on the monitoring cost. If it is too expensive, then it makes more sense to monitor it locally. But you may not have access to that data from other locations like you will with the monitoring service.

If you already have a computer running 24/7 for other reasons, then it may be harder to justify the expense of the monitoring service. But some might like it for the flexability of being able to access their information from any internet browser around the world.

I guess this is all hypothetical arguements until we get actual firm pricing on the monitoring as well.

I think he meant that the data is essentially his, being that it's his electrical and monitoring system. I am not sure what it costs, but I imagine that for a niche product like this that paid hosting makes more sense than payment through advertisement.

Of course, maybe if this service reaches critical mass we could see a move to that model. (Google can do it, so can anyone else... right!!??).

Me, Ill just use a local machine to store (MySQL) the data and use something like munin to display it. For a contractor, as an example, a hosted solution is probably the best idea.

A hosted solution would be great for a rental property etc. I think the hosting has a market it is just not for everyone.

Well I am glad they waited to release a more mature product, but it will also prevent me from buying one right away. I have had to unexpected replace my aging main computer (used as a 24/7 CQC and SageTV server). I'm excited to have a new Quad Core rig, but my wallet needs some time to recover. :)

That's a shame. B) But the new system will be sweet, I am sure.

I've ordered a SheevaPlug with the intent of using it with the 1240, X10, and some other applications. Let's hope it all goes as "planned".

I just have to figure out what CT's I need before ordering the 1240. I've got a mix of aluminum and copper wiring in this ol' place. :)

Hi,

As many know, in the US electricity is provided via two 120V/60Hz phases shifted by 180 degrees with respect to each other. High consumption appliances are connected to both phases thus effectively being fed at 240V.

Now, as far as I understand and please correct me if I am wrong, the ECM-1240 has only one voltage channel and two current channels (two CTs). So, how can the device calculate energy consumption if it "knows" only one phase voltage ?

Thanks

I think that question was asked and answered in the older 1220 model thread, somewhere in these forums. Or if someone here remembers, maybe they can repeat it.
