Structued Wiring Ustec/OnQ help needed

Hello,

I am a newbie. so I apologize in advance, if i am breaking any protocols here.

I just bought a house and the previous owner has installed the tecgate Server (tecsat 850) from Ustec with the following modules

1. CX-Amp8 (does not look like what is in the manual it has 8 tv outs and 4 inputs --- dss1 input, dss2 input, cable modem input and catv antenna input)

2. 8 way internal CX module CX DM8 (has 8 coax inputs marked as internals)

3. CXBus 4 way module CX DM4.1 (4 coax ports marked external and 4 coax ports marked internal)

4. DSS and cable modem out module called CX-DSSMODEM

5. phone distribution (TP-DM6r modules)

Additionally he also gave me an extra Cx-Amp8 , CX-dm8 and cx-dssmodem as spares.

The whole house has 16 x 2 RG6 connectors (ie. 2 connectors each in 16 different locations). (presumably 16 ports for cable/sat tv distribution and 16 ports for internal signal distribution thro’ modulators?)

All the cables were in the attic and I pulled them into the tec gate server. Now I have the following questions:

How and where do I connect the 16 x 2 co-ax cable? With the available hard ware?
What wires get connected to the cx dm4.1?
Do the tvout of the cx-amp8 go to the tv locations and the o/p of the modulators go to the internal ports on the dx-dm8?
If the available modules are not enough, what modules do I need to buy and how do I connect them?
Also the door is missing from the rough-in box, where can I find the door/cover (what is the item # ..if they are not being sold, perhaps, if I get the part # and name, then I can search for it on ebay)
additionally, if you have a way to do the same in-expensively (ie video distribution), can you pl. send out a wiring diagram with components (I don’t have too much money to spend .. we just had a baby J )

Happy New Year in advance
regards
kiki

I wish I could help, but I know nothing of your hardware.

I do know that you need to either become an expert, or hire one. Read all the relevant manuals you can find online. Contact the manufacturer and distributors if they don't post what you need. If someone else can do it, then you can too.

interesting line... I did find a manual that seems to have some info on it:
http://www.crsys.net/pdf/UStec_User_Manual.pdf

It seems onq has swallowed them up in early 2007

The good news is the wiring is pretty industry standard... so even if you can't get parts for that thing anymore, you can always just convert it over to the standard stuff we all use. The stuff that's dated and hard to get parts for is the cabinet and what's in it.

Check out the manual and if it doesn't answer your questions, we can break them down - this is basic stuff... video splitters, modulators, etc. I guess the most important thing is understanding what all you're trying to accomplish (what incomingi sources you're trying to send where) - and do you even need channel modulation? What would you modulate? Are you using satelite, cable, etc? And even with Satelite - the technology has changed drastically - at least with DirecTV - so if you put in a modern dish and receiver, that stuff wouldn't even work.

You did mention being low on cash... but honestly if I moved into a house with all that stuff, most likely I'd rip it all out, put a new structured wiring can in place that holds all the industry standard modules; route the existing wiring into that, and then hook up the wires however you need to accomplish the types of distribution you need. It probably sounds worse than it is; you're really only talking maybe a few hundred bucks for a nice modern enclosure and some TV splitters; and there's a good chance some of those modules could still be used if still applicable and needed for what you're trying to do... specifically the modulators because those are generally pricey and would still work. If trying to use some of the existing stuff, I'd see if it's compatible with the newer OnQ cans, or just go to either Leviton or Channel Vision... We'd help you through it if you go that route... The longer you wait the longer you're working with older stuff that's hard to work around, and the harder it'll be to make the change later.

Regardless - let us know what you have, and what you want it all hooked to and we can probably help you through this...
