Usually in a retrofit the holes aren't huge unless someone gets carried away.
On the security side 1/2" is large enough for 99% of the cables barring a large bundle for home runs, but that would be the exception.
If "chainsaw Charlie" makes his appearance running cables through holes that are sized that way...you've got bigger issues.
