DC signal in zone contact

I'm planning to connect an energy meter to one of the OP II zones to manage energy loads.
The counter uses a transistor internally to give out the signal, so I must input 9 to 24 DC to get it back whenever there is a "pulse" that I want to count with the OP II.

Can I just send this 9-24 V DC straight in one of the mark board zones or do I have to put a relais in between?
In the latter option, what kind of relais should I use since it will have to work continuously with blinks going to one each second to one each 30 s?

Thanks.

The Op II zone voltage range is 0 - 5V, so 9 - 24 is obviously too high.  You could adjust it with resistors, but that isn't smart because of grounding problems. A relay would be best for isolation and a reed relay could handle the constant use.
