Who has Nuvo Music Port?

Can the Radio button do anything else, besides possibly Pandora?

FYI.. I know have in my possession and up and running the MPS4.

On mine, the radio button/selection contains XM, RadioTime and Pandora.

Fyi. On my musicport, as on the webclient and the mirage client, the radio button and pandora button do nothing. It did work under the Autonomics trial but that only lasted for two weeks. As soon as I enter my Nuvo license all references to Pandora disappear.

I have another question. Is there a way to have both the musicport and a second seial connected to be able to configure the GC? Since there is only one serial on the GC that can be used for these tasks...

thx

Not that I know off..I've been having to replug the GC (E6G in my case) directly to serial rather than MP for Firmware updates and config. Doesnt need to be done often..but still a bit annoying.

Thanks Mav. A bit of a pain to have to unplug etc. As an update, I have determined that I do, in fact, have access to Pandora via the Musicport client or Mirage, or the web interface, but not the keypads. You can say "thumbs up", "thumbs down", or skip, but there is no selection on the keypad for Pandora Radio, and your stations do not appear. This is different than the demo of Mirage, which not only allowed you access to XM Radio, but allowed you to select Pandora and all stations you had created, from the keypad. Note there is still no option for Radiotime or XM Radio. It turned out the reason it wasn't showing up for me previously is I'm in Canada, so I had to run it through my US proxy in order for it to show up.

Nuvo told me to email the regional sales manager, asking about the MP FW update.

It will probably be available in June or July. There is still some development going on with it that allows it to function like the Music Port Server.

Kevin Davis | Eastern Regional Sales Manager

argh.

I will refrain from noting the never ending "creep" for Pandroa on the MP...oh wait, no I won't. For the folks who have forgot, Nuvo last said the capability would be release when the MPS came out...at the same time. I'm not bitter, I swear ;)

Well, to be fair, the MPS was also a bit later than they said, so priority-wise one would expect them to concentrate on the new product first. And more importantly, they *are* doing this as a free upgrade for those of us that already purchased the MusicPort... Getting free functionality that was never part of the original product is about as much as you can ask for. I'll avoid throwing barbs at them about the timing of my free stuff...

And since Pandora support is kinda there (just not on the keypads) in the current release, you *do* have some new functions already.

(ok, but: Where's my spy camera? Where's my spy camera???? WHERE is my spy camera??!?!?) :P

I've been looking at the MP/MP Server. The server looks like a complete joke. Might be good for a complete out-of-the-box experience, but extremely redundant for an existing setup. For that price they better give you at least 2TB of storage. The NV-NNA adapter appears to be all thats needed to write custom software and get away from the limitations of the MP. Has anyone done or have software that does direct communication to the NV-NNA? All I'm looking for really is a way to browse my media library from the keypads - and I'm willing even to write the software to do it, just need to confirm that the NV-NNA is the only 'addon' required.

Thanks,
Kent

NuvoPete:

Thanks for stopping in...I've bought an E6G, T2FXG and MP this january and have been playing with them since...Generally things work well, but i've had to call tech support a few times. Prof. Killowatt seem to be very knowledgeble and a nice guy, he's a great help.

I called with an issue where if the MP is connected via serial to the E6G the tuners in the T2FXG start power cyling every few minutes when they are not in use. This means that are essentially always on and thus not very energy efficient (one of the reason i got the E6G over the GC) and my other concern is that the power relays will get many mnay cycles on them (maybe like 100 a day) and may thus prematurely fail. If this happens to occur right outside the warrenty period i woudl be quite upset. Tech support said he would note the issue but no ticket number was given or anything like that. I have gone through extensive troubleshooting on this issue, isolating keypads, disconnecting anything that may have undue influence, even the MP is not connected via serail to the server during the test. In the end the only things connected are all Nuvo gear (not even autonomic software) connected through Nuvo NuvoNet patch cable (which I checked with a LAN tester) and this still occurs. Since it doesnt power cyle when the tuners are in use it doesnt hinder my actual usage, but i would think it's something that needs to get fixed.

Mavic, Did you found a solution for this issue? I have the same kind of setup (E6G+T2DAB+MP) and Nuvo said to me it was a 'known bug', but never came back with a solution... Maybe you fixed it?

I wouldn't call it a joke, compared to many other "media servers", it's both functional and less expensive. Now, that said, yes, it's simply a matter of hardware and software... The MusicPort is simply a bundle of the NNA and an Autonomic Mirage license (customized for NuVo and with the "bridge" module to talk to NNA). The MPS is simply a bundle of the MusicPort and all the hardware into a nice, neat, working solution...

The NuVoNet Adapter is all you need to get started. There's a white paper on the NuVo website detailing the protocol. I've also thought about writing my own control piece to run several FireFly media server instances, but since Firefly doesn't contain its own local playback modules, getting it all bundled would be more work than I'm willing to donate to the effort...

But if you're going to take on the task - take a look at Firefly for the database / music server portion to get started. If you can find a "client" that can be controlled that supports all the codecs, the NNA portion should be very straightforward. It's all the "rest" of it that's non-trivial...

I ordered my Nuvo system last week. I think I'm just going to buy the NNA, it’s cheaper than getting it with the software, and by the looks of it the software won't integrate well with everything else I'm looking at doing (plus I'm a software developer). Also looks like there might be a way to add in non-multimedia menu items for automation tasks & security integration into the keypads, which are really slick looking (plus would save $ from buying additional security keypads).

I'll take a look at FireFly (btw, I loved that series). I also found some tools from Intel on writing a custom DLNA UPNP host, which would be great for the ultimate customization. I might lean this route, because I store all of my music in WMA Lossless, which most DLNA clients don't support, so I need to implement on-the-fly WMA Lossless to PCM conversion.

Finding a "client" to play all the codecs might be difficult - especially if it is cross platform. However, writing a custom player, it is very easy to simply let it play anything the system has codecs installed for (Install the Combined Community Codec Pack and you can play almost everything). I do have a heck of a lot of programming projects building up, but I'll get to all of them

Ha! I bought the MusicPort (with the Autonomic software) specifically because it does support WMA lossless... (as does Firefly - no relation to the great TV show, AFAIK). I'm able to use the same WMA lossless library on the server for both the NuVo MP and Firefly instances, which are used to support my Roku Soundbridges.

There is another white paper on the NuVo site for integrating additional applications along with the MusicPort (Autonomic Mirage) software. The paper is called "Using Music Port with Home Automation Systems". There's a pass through API for both serial and IP control... For the cost difference (street) between NNA and NV-MP, you might go ahead with the NV-MP and have a fully functional setup to start from.

Thanks Jeff, that's very good to know. From early price searches, it looks like the NNA is almost 1/2 the cost of Music Port. If the software also acts as a DLNA server, I might just be sold on it (I have other DLNA devices I need to serve).

Are there any issues if the music is not local to the server running the software? I have all of my music on a NAS, and some programs (WMP, but for some reason not WMC) have issues adding the music, complaining of not being able to index it.

** FOR MUSIC PORT - NOT MUSIC PORT SERVER ** -that'll teach me not to read back a few posts... :)

Hey Kent,

None of my music is local to the server and I haven't noted any issues with the MP. Sometimes it takes a while to populate the list of genres/artists/albums/etc at the keypad, but usually that's because I'm doing something major on the NAS or the network.

Works great!

Just wanted to make it clear - that's for the Music Port, and not the Music Port Server MPS4. MPS4 has to have the music files on the local hard drive, according to Nuvo.
