Is This Computer Worth $226?

Does this have to be loaded in pairs? I found a 512 chip for $79. I assume they have a 256 and a 128 chip in them now. By adding a 512 and keeping the 128 that would give me 768mb and this thing would hum.

I openend it up and confirm it is indeed PC133 Dimm Memory. The stickers on the Ram Chips state 128Meg and 256 Respectively.

As for the memory having to be in pairs, thats not the case. I was 99% sure of this, and just pulled the 128 stick out and booted it up to the desktop to make sure. The "pairs" thing really only applies to much older motherboards around the 233Mhz times.

As was mentioned above, there is one single thumbscrew to turn loose, and the cover slides right off... VERY easy access.

Ok, now my memory is fading with age... BUT in the original ad, did it not say it was a "DVD CDRW Combo Drive Speeds vary"? I could SWEAR that is what it said.... Now when I go back it simple says CDRW drive. I remember clearly thinking the DVD would be a nice addition to this PC's specs.

Nope just checked an it states CD-RW(speed may vary).

Heck this is a giant step up for one of my PCs that was a 233 MHz, with 128 MB ram and a 2 GB hard drive. ;) And the funny thing is I paid 3 times what this one cost.

Now for a good quality 15" monitor cheap for my daughters.

I know it NOW says on the page that it is a "CDRW drive" but I could swear when I bought it last week that it said it was a DVD CDRW combo drive. I just emailed them and will wait and see what they have to say.

I just went and bought another one.... I think this will make a nice little dedicated HS machine. My HS machine is currently a goliath tower with just 1.4Ghz CPU and sounds like an airplane cleared for takeoff. I will just have to switch to either a USB or serial modem for the caller ID info. The power savings, as well as being so quiet will make it worth the effort.

It's a shame that there is not a single PCI slot in the machine, as it would make a nice little Media center PC.

If anyone is thinking about getting one of these machines, the offer ends tommorrow, 09/17/05.

EDIT:

Rupp, HERE is a great brand new 15" LCD monitor in sealed box for $89.

Based upon Electron's comments & others on the first page of the thread, it appears that it was a CD-RW since the beginning. But maybe that is where you got the DVD idea?
It does look like the CDRW drive is just a laptop drive, so if that's the case, you should be able to replace it with a laptop DVD-ROM drive.
To make it a real simple media center machine, couldn't you use one of the USB based TV tuners? Are the USB ports 1.1 or 2? I haven't fired mine up yet.

XP Media Center Edition is pretty picky about what hardware, as far as tuners, that it will work with. There might be a USB one out there that is compatible though... Or you could just go with another Media Center Program. I personally went with XP Media Center due to the fact of the no hassle TV schedule downloading.

I was not intending to do this myself, as I have a working MCPC and honestly do not need to go by a 3rd one of these systems! ;)
