Touch Screen 32A02 Help

I have a 32A02 3.9 inch TS. Its been working fine for me connected to an OPII. I was doing some trim work and disconnected it. Not looking (being clumsy) reversed the connector on the LCD panel when plugging it back in. It beeped out loud before I disconnected it. I actually like this size LCD in its simplicity and function. I also utilize 7", 9" and greater for "other" stuff. Relating to WAF it is ideal versus a 12" LCD touchscreen both in footprint and presentation.

Now the LCD boots fine (firmware and all) but doesn't communicate with the panel. I just called HAI and they no longer support it and cannot repair it.

They are looking to see if they still have a schematic for said device.

Wondering if anyone has a spare board to sell me (maybe with a cracked LCD?) or can offer some repair tips?

Most of the components are surface mounted. There are four larger surface mounted diodes that I just checked with a multimeter (Diodes in place) on the daughter board nearest the back of the device.

All of them appear OK with getting a tone one way but not the other except for D3 which gives me a tone either way (shorted?)

Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Most diodes do blow short. You generally need to order special diodes to get blow open (usually used for power supplies...I used to design power supplies).

My guess (from what you have provided for information) is he may be your culprit. Kind of hard to guess, but as the MFTR about D3 specifically, see what they offer in regards to it.

Thanks Dan.

Its a surface mount diode and using a magnifying glass I see KK 64A on it but can't really make out the logo on it. I did a quick search and found the logo to be General Semiconductor?

Can't find the part though on Mouser or DigiKey or cross reference the number on the diode (KK 64A).

Working blind right now - a schematic would help a bit. I did smell something burning for a second or two so I did a quick smell of the two boards and do notice the "burn" smell in the area of same diode on the daughter board and nothing noted (relating to a burn smell) on the main board.

Here is a close up picture of the diode and other pictures of the daughter board and main board. I don't really see any physical evidence of heat / short other than what I mentioned.

Still waiting on a schematic but wondering if anyone has been able to identify the diode in question. I've searched / cross referenced and still cannot find it. I can't understand (other than the mention of a hurricane) why there's not ancillary documentation on said LCD?

I think the part number may be - take-this.opportunity-to-upgrade.to.a.new-touchscreen :P

Steve,

Understood. I have other TS's of various sizes. This one is a favorite of my wife (cuz of the size) and its simplicity.

Thanks Edge.

Wondering how many other folks this happened to. The 4 pin connector is not really keyed in any way such that it would be very easy to reverse the connection on this specific model TS.

Having said this I would tend to believe the accidental "reversing" of the connection and subsequent damage to the device would be well documented (even today) or engrained in some memories over at HAI.

The TS appears to have been designed and constructed for long life and therefore most folks utilizing them today (even at 8 years old) would leave them in place or repair them. The places that these are mounted today (again WAF) would not be suitable for any larger LCD. It really is mostly due/related to the ambience / aesthetics that my wife wants to keep in the home.

Perhaps yours was an early version, but all of the ones I have installed were keyed.

I think I have a couple of the older 3.7" touch screens, new, in the box. I usually keep a few spare, but when the new 5.7s came out no one wanted the old ones.

If you are interested, PM me with an offer.

Hello Tim,

I tried to send you a PM but the feature appears to be disabled on your account.

Yes I believe they are very early versions in that only 32A02 and copyright is on the board (no serial number).

I think something is messed up on my account. I had been looking at this forum for about a week before I joined but now that I have joined nothing on my profile is working. I cant edit my siganture, picture or really anytihing.

I am by trade a carpenter but started working with some LV instllers about 5 years ago. Now I do a few installs per year on my own. General custom carpentry is still my main business but I like doing automation stuff and have a fairly nice HAI system in my own home. BTW I looked and I have 1 new 3.7" in a box and one that I pulled. I don't know why I pulled it for sure but it was probably an upgrade. If it was bad I would not have kept it. If you want the new one, I will just throw in the other one. I haven't even had anyone ask about one of the 3.7" in a year.

Still wondering about the schematic for the 3.7" TS's.

I replaced the one defective diode on the 3.7" TS but still do not get communications to the OmniProII. Boots up fine though.

BTW did purchased two 5.7" TS's (so my setup would be 2 3.7", 2 5.7" and 2 keypads).

Wondering if I'll be fine on the power side (I don't really have the room for a power hub - unless I could fit it in the existing panel).
